Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), the operator of Velana International Airport, has paid its employees an annual bonus of MVR 25,000, marking the fourth consecutive year the company has made such a payout.
Several
employees confirmed on Wednesday that the bonus had been deposited into their
accounts. The payout, which began in 2022, has become a yearly practice by the
state-owned company. Last year, the bonus was issued in September.
With a workforce
of more than 4,200, the total cost of this year’s bonus payments exceeds MVR
105 million. The payment underscores MACL’s ability to distribute significant
employee benefits despite its financial commitments.
According to the
Auditor General’s Office, MACL recorded a net profit of MVR 1 billion last
year. However, the company also borrowed USD 80 million (approximately MVR 1.2
billion) to support government financing, raising questions about how such
large-scale bonus payments align with its broader fiscal responsibilities.
MACL remains one
of the country’s most profitable state-owned enterprises, managing the
Maldives’ main international gateway while continuing major airport expansion
and infrastructure development projects.
