Maldivian Unveils Upgraded Seaplane Terminal at Velana International Airport

Maldivian has officially unveiled its upgraded Seaplane Terminal at Velana International Airport, completing what the airline describes as its most comprehensive improvement to the facility since launching seaplane operations.

The redevelopment has expanded and redesigned more than 15,000 square feet of interior and exterior space. Guided by passenger feedback, the project aims to make the terminal more comfortable and functional while giving visitors a sense of the Maldives before they board their onward flights.

At the centre of the upgrade is the Huvandhumaa Lounge, which has more than doubled in size and gained improved amenities. The terminal also has dedicated Premium and CIP facilities for guests seeking greater privacy and personalized service. An additional CIP boarding gate allows direct boarding from the lounge.

One of the most visible changes is an expanded outdoor area overlooking the lagoon and seaplane operations. With comfortable seating and a mini golf area, it gives passengers a place to relax in the sea breeze and watch aircraft arrive and depart for islands across the country.

Inside, a spacious new entrance features a signature wall designed to reflect the character of the Maldives. Families have a dedicated children’s corner, while a new retail outlet offers locally inspired souvenirs. Modern decking now connects the boarding gates to the seaplane jetty.

The project also includes exterior cladding intended to improve the building’s appearance and longevity. A newly constructed staff canteen provides employees with a dedicated space and is expected to support day-to-day operations.

Speaking at the inauguration, Maldivian Managing Director Ibrahim Iyas said the upgraded terminal reflects the airline’s commitment to improving the guest experience from the moment visitors arrive. He said the redesigned facility brings together comfort, convenience and Maldivian hospitality while meeting the needs of passengers and resort partners.

Iyas said the investment forms part of a broader strategy to modernize Maldivian’s infrastructure, services and fleet. In August 2026, the airline signed an agreement with Canada’s De Havilland Aircraft Company to acquire two DHC-6 Twin Otter Classic 300-G aircraft. Maldivian says it will be the first operator in the country to introduce the latest generation model.

The airline said the terminal redevelopment also supports the government’s wider initiative to strengthen seaplane services through improvements to infrastructure and service standards. Together with its planned aircraft additions, the upgraded facility is intended to strengthen connectivity to the islands and support the Maldives’ tourism industry.
