The government is exploring the introduction of Remote Working and Content Creator visas as part of broader efforts to diversify the Maldives’ tourism sector.
Tourism Minister Thoriq Ibrahim announced the initiative at a press conference, noting that facilitating longer stays and attracting new visitor segments remain key priorities. Current visa-on-arrival arrangements allow tourists to stay for 30 days, with extensions up to 90 days described as cumbersome.
Authorities are working to streamline the extension process while introducing specialized visas to attract remote workers and digital content creators. The Minister said these segments could significantly increase occupancy rates, particularly in the guesthouse market.
Additional reforms are also under consideration, including the regulation and expansion of sports fishing, big-game fishing, and advanced recreational diving. The global market for big-game fishing is valued at approximately USD 7.2 billion, while enhanced diving experiences represent a USD 5.2 billion segment.
Plans also include easing restrictions on spear fishing, improving superyacht tourism, and developing halal, education, and research-based tourism offerings.
The strategy reflects a shift toward diversifying tourism products and extending visitor stays to strengthen sector resilience.
