Indian government has imposed port restrictions on the export of prohibited or restricted essential commodities to the Maldives.

The Indian government imposed restriction according to the notification from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT).

According to the new policy, export of essential commodities to the Maldives are now only allowed from four ports, which are;

  • Mudra Sea Port
  • Tuticorin Sea Port
  • Nhava Sheva Sea Port
  • ICD Tughlakabad

Though earlier the Indian government announced export restrictions on nine of its major exported commodities, including onion, potato, egg, rice and sugar, export of these items never stopped to the Maldives under the ‘Neighborhood First’ policy.

Since the 1981 Maldives-India agreement facilitating import of essential items to the Maldives, this year marks the highest import quota for the island nation from India as well.

Moreover, India increased the export quota of construction materials to the Maldives by 25%, driving up Indian construction material exports to 1,000 metric tons.
