The State Trading Organization (STO) has confirmed that a new shipment of cooking gas has arrived in the Maldives, with the sale of standard 10kg cylinders set to resume today, bringing relief to households ahead of the busy Ramadan season.
An STO Media official told Maldives Business Review (MBR) that the newly received stock will allow the company’s subsidiary, Maldives Gas, to restore its regular distribution of 10kg cylinders after a temporary adjustment in response to regional supply chain disruptions. Sales will recommence under normal arrangements starting today.
The temporary shift had seen Maldives Gas offering 7kg cylinders at discounted rates as an alternative to the standard 10kg cylinders, following tightening Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) supplies across parts of Asia. Several countries in the region, including India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, have also been affected by constraints in LPG availability due to broader market pressures.
“There will be no shortage of gas during the upcoming Ramadan. We will begin distributing the 10kg cylinders starting today, just as before,” the STO Media official stated, assuring the public that adequate stocks are now in place to meet expected demand.
Demand for cooking gas typically rises sharply during the holy month of Ramadan, as households increase food preparation for iftar and suhoor. In anticipation of this seasonal surge, STO had earlier moved to reassure the public about the continuity of supply.
With the latest shipment now in the country and standard cylinder sales restored, STO says it is confident that the market will remain stable in the coming weeks, ensuring households can prepare for Ramadan without concern over gas availability.
