The Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) will introduce a new batch of 10 Rufiyaa banknotes into circulation starting April 1, as part of ongoing efforts to replenish currency stocks and replace worn-out notes.
The central bank confirmed that the new banknotes are from the existing “Ran Dhihafaheh” series and will circulate alongside current 10 Rufiyaa notes already in use.
According to the MMA, the 10 Rufiyaa denomination experiences high usage in daily transactions, resulting in faster physical deterioration compared to higher-value notes. Due to their limited use in large transactions, these notes are less frequently returned to the banking system, making it more difficult to remove damaged currency from circulation.
The latest release marks the third printing of the 10 Rufiyaa denomination under the current series. The first print was issued in October 2015 with the signature of former Governor Azima Adam, followed by a second print in March 2018 signed by former Governor Ahmed Naseer.
The newly issued notes are dated July 31, 2025, and carry the signature of current MMA Governor Ahmed Munawar. A key update in this print is the inclusion of the Maldivian Rufiyaa currency symbol, which appears alongside the face value on both sides of the banknote.
The MMA noted that with the current series in circulation for over a decade, a growing number of 10 Rufiyaa notes are reaching the end of their lifespan as soiled currency, increasing the need for replacement.
The authority emphasized that the periodic release of new banknotes is a standard operational process aimed at meeting cash demand and maintaining the quality of currency in circulation.
Maintaining an adequate supply of lower denomination notes is essential for everyday transactions across the economy, particularly in retail and small-scale commerce, where cash continues to play a significant role.
