Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has begun reclamation work on the unreclaimed portion of Giraavarulhu Falhu, as part of efforts to support infrastructure development and ease congestion in the capital, Malé.
According to MACL, a total of 167.15 hectares is planned to be reclaimed from Giraavarulhu falhu. Work has now commenced on reclaiming 97.15 hectares of the area. The lagoon reclamation is being carried out using dredgers with a capacity of 22,000 cubic metres.
The reclaimed land is expected to be used to help ease housing pressure and congestion in Malé, while also supporting future development projects.
The reclamation work is being undertaken by Peninsula Infrastructure, a fully owned subsidiary of MACL. The company was established in October 2025 to implement major infrastructure and land reclamation projects in the Maldives.
