Air India marked the 50th anniversary of its flight operations to the Maldives on 21 February 2026, commemorating five decades of aviation connectivity between India and the Maldives and reaffirming the airline’s longstanding role in linking the two neighboring countries.
The national carrier of India first launched services to the Maldives on 21 February 1976, establishing one of the earliest international air routes serving the island nation. Over the years, the airline has contributed to strengthening bilateral relations, supporting tourism expansion and facilitating greater movement of people between the two countries.

The milestone was celebrated at Velana International Airport with special welcome activities organized to mark the occasion. Air India flight AI 2239 received a ceremonial water salute upon arrival, carrying 139 passengers on board. Passengers arriving on the commemorative flight were welcomed with roses and commemorative treats as part of the celebration.

Aviation stakeholders noted that the anniversary reflects the airline’s consistent presence in the Maldivian aviation landscape and its contribution to maintaining reliable regional connectivity over the decades.
The anniversary also underscores the broader significance of air links in deepening economic cooperation, cultural exchange and tourism flows between the Maldives and India. As travel demand between the two countries continues to grow, the milestone highlights the enduring importance of long standing aviation partnerships in supporting the Maldives’ connectivity with key regional markets.
