Sea-to-Air Cargo Service Moves 140 Tons to 26 Countries in January

Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has announced that its Sea-to-Air cargo service facilitated the transport of more than 140 tons of goods to 26 countries in January, underscoring the Maldives’ growing role as a logistics hub connecting maritime and air freight networks.

According to MPL, the shipments were dispatched through five different airlines, highlighting the expanding reach of the service since its launch on May 15, 2024. The company said the January figures reflect steady operational momentum for the integrated cargo model, which combines sea and air transportation to provide faster and more efficient delivery solutions.

The Sea-to-Air service allows cargo arriving by sea to be transferred directly to outbound flights, significantly reducing transit time and offering international shippers an alternative logistics route. MPL noted that the model is contributing to economic activity by strengthening connectivity with global markets and supporting trade flows through the Maldives.

Officials emphasized that the continued performance of the service demonstrates rising demand for flexible transport solutions and forms part of broader efforts to position the Maldives as a strategic transit point within regional and global supply chains.

The new cargo terminal developed under the Velana International Airport expansion project has also supported this growth. The facility, inaugurated early last year, has the capacity to process up to 120,000 tons of cargo annually and has contributed to an increase in overall cargo volumes handled in the country.

MPL stated that continued investment in infrastructure and logistics services is expected to further improve operational efficiency and reinforce the Maldives’ emerging position in international trade and transportation networks.
