Island Aviation Services Limited and the Maldives Meteorological Service (MMS) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding and a Service Agreement to deliver dedicated aviation weather services at Maafaru International Airport, marking a significant advancement in aviation safety and operational efficiency for the northern region of the Maldives.
Senior officials from both organizations attended the signing ceremony at the Island Aviation Head Office in Malé. Ibrahim Iyas, Managing Director of Island Aviation Services Limited, and Abdulla Wahid, Director General of the Maldives Meteorological Service, formalized the agreement.
What the Agreement Delivers
Under the terms of the agreement, MMS will establish a new dedicated weather observatory at Maafaru International Airport to strengthen regional weather data collection. The service package will cover the full spectrum of aviation meteorological needs, including real-time meteorological observations, weather forecasts, warnings, and advisory support critical to the safe and efficient movement of aircraft through the region.
Ibrahim Iyas, Managing Director of Island Aviation Services Limited, described the agreement as a significant improvement in the airport's operational standards. "This partnership represents a major milestone in strengthening aviation safety standards and operational reliability at Maafaru International Airport. Accurate and timely weather information is critical for pilots, air traffic controllers, and airport operations, and this agreement ensures we continue to meet international best practices."
Abdulla Wahid, Director General of the Maldives Meteorological Service, echoed the sentiment, stating that the partnership would go beyond safety alone. "The provision of dedicated aviation weather services will not only enhance safety but also improve efficiency and resilience in airport operations, supporting the continued growth of the aviation and tourism sectors in the Maldives."

A Growing Gateway in the North
The timing of this agreement reflects the rapid rise of Maafaru International Airport as a strategic hub in the Maldives' aviation network. Located approximately 180 kilometers north of Malé, Maafaru has recorded over 9,000 flight movements and more than 3,000 international flights between 2019 and mid-2025, serving over 250,000 passengers across domestic, charter, private jet, and seaplane operations, making it the second busiest airport in the country.
A major milestone was achieved in July 2025 with the inauguration of an extended 2,850-meter runway, with the expanded apron providing additional parking stands and improved maneuvering space, enabling the airport to better accommodate private jets and charter flights while supporting scheduled commercial services.
In 2025, Maafaru handled 804 private jet movements, a 38 percent increase from 579 movements the year before, with December alone recording 102 movements. This surge in premium air traffic has placed even greater importance on reliable, real-time meteorological data to ensure safe and seamless flight operations around the clock.

ICAO Standards and National Commitment
The introduction of enhanced aviation meteorological services at Maafaru aligns with standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the global authority that governs aviation safety practices across member states. For an airport that now regularly handles wide-body aircraft, including Boeing 777s and Airbus A330s, having a dedicated on-site weather observatory is not simply a convenience. It is a requirement of responsible international airport management.
Island Aviation Services Limited, established in 2000 and wholly owned by the Government of Maldives, operates the national airline Maldivian. The company provides domestic inter-island services as well as international services to India, Bangladesh, Thailand, and China from its main hub at Velana International Airport. Beyond the airline, IASL also manages airport operations, engineering and maintenance, cargo services, Maldivian Holidays, and seaplane services.
The Maldives Meteorological Service serves as the national authority responsible for weather and climate services across the country, including specialized aviation meteorology to support safety, economic activity, and public well-being.
Supporting Tourism and Economic Growth
Maafaru International Airport plays a critical role in supporting the tourism industry in Noonu Atoll, which boasts the highest number of high-end resorts in the Maldives, with eight resorts and 14 guest houses currently in operation. Timely and accurate weather services at the airport will directly support the seamless movement of tourists into the northern atolls, where luxury resort operators depend on precise scheduling for speedboat and seaplane transfers.
The Government of Maldives, under President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's administration, has made it a priority to make Island Aviation a profitable and competitive national carrier, with the Transport Minister targeting profitability within two years and commissioning a series of infrastructure upgrades to that end. The MOU with MMS is consistent with that broader modernization agenda, reinforcing the national carrier's commitment to meeting and exceeding international safety benchmarks.
This agreement reflects the continued collaboration between Island Aviation Services Limited and the Maldives Meteorological Service to strengthen national infrastructure, improve service reliability, and support economic growth through safe and efficient air transport.
