MPL Advances North Harbor Modernization with Installation of 36 New Mooring Blocks

Maldives Ports Limited has begun installing 36 new mooring blocks at North Harbor as part of a major modernization effort aimed at improving vessel safety, efficiency, and operational capacity in one of the capital’s busiest maritime zones.

The upgrade follows the completion of redevelopment works near the Fish Market area along Boduthakurufaanu Magu, after which MPL resumed full operations at Zone A of North Harbor. Cargo and passenger vessels that had been temporarily redirected to the MMA area and the Hulhumalé Petrol Jetty during road construction have now returned to the quay wall adjacent to the main road.

According to MPL, the installation of the newly submerged mooring blocks replaces older, deteriorated mooring systems that were no longer suitable for safe vessel berthing. The company noted that this improvement represents one of the most significant operational enhancements since services resumed in the area, providing greater stability and security for vessels utilizing the harbor.

Alongside the mooring upgrades, MPL’s operational team is working to introduce essential utility services including electricity and water to Zone A, facilities that were previously unavailable in this section of the harbor. The addition of these services is expected to enhance support for vessels and crews while improving overall harbor functionality.

MPL stated that the redevelopment effort is part of a broader strategy to modernize North Harbor infrastructure in response to increasing maritime activity and growing demand for efficient berthing facilities in Malé.

The company further confirmed that preparations are underway to facilitate the transition of vessels to Zone B, the western quay wall, within the coming week. The phased transition is intended to ensure uninterrupted operations while continuing infrastructure improvements across the harbor.

The latest developments highlight MPL’s ongoing efforts to strengthen port infrastructure and reinforce North Harbor’s role as a critical hub for cargo movement, passenger transport, and fisheries related operations in the Maldives.
