Fuel imports into the Maldives rose sharply in July, reaching MVR 923 million, according to the latest figures released by Maldives Customs. The figure marks an increase from MVR 777 million in June and MVR 790 million in May, making it the second highest monthly total recorded so far this year. The highest was in January, when imports peaked at MVR 960 million.
While fuel
imports climbed, overall imports excluding fuel stood at MVR 3.6 billion in
July, about MVR 400 million lower than the previous month. Food imports
continued to play a significant role, ranking as the second-largest category
with a value of MVR 859 million.
On the export
front, total shipments were valued at MVR 210 million, with frozen bluefin tuna
dominating at MVR 126 million. Other fisheries products also contributed,
though at comparatively smaller values.
Customs revenue
in July rose to MVR 295 million, higher than the corresponding period last
year, reflecting stronger trade activity despite fluctuations in import
categories.
The data
underscores the country’s sustained reliance on fuel imports while highlighting
fisheries exports as the key driver of outbound trade.
