Island Aviation Takes Over Dharavandhoo Airport to Boost Connectivity and Development

Island Aviation Services Ltd (IASL) has officially taken over the management of B. Dharavandhoo Airport, marking a significant step forward in enhancing domestic aviation services and supporting regional development.

The agreement was signed at a special ceremony held to launch the airport’s terminal development project, with Mohamed Ahmed Shameem, Director General of the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation, signing on behalf of the government, and IASL Managing Director Ibrahim Iyas representing the company.

The decision to transfer management to Island Aviation was first announced by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu during his visit to Dharavandhoo on August 13, 2025. The move reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring that the airport’s development aligns with the expectations of the local community while strengthening service standards and operational efficiency.

Dharavandhoo Airport, which opened on October 17, 2012 under a public-private partnership with Coastline Hotels & Resorts, has grown into one of the busiest domestic airports in the country. With more than 42,000 flights handled and over 1.8 million passengers served since its inauguration, the airport plays a vital role in connecting Baa Atoll to the rest of the Maldives. Currently accommodating an average of eight flights daily, the airport is served by Maldivian, Flyme and Manta Air.

The airport’s importance is further underscored by its contribution to tourism, with 72 percent of its passengers being international visitors. It also provides employment for 99 staff members, supporting livelihoods within the community.

Located in Baa Atoll, one of the Maldives’ leading tourism hubs with more than 4,600 beds across 16 resorts and 79 guesthouses, Dharavandhoo Airport is positioned as a key gateway for visitors. The transfer of management to IASL, combined with ongoing terminal development, is expected to further boost connectivity, enhance passenger experience, and support the continued growth of tourism and economic activity in the region.
