B. Kamadhoo is set to welcome direct seaplane connections following an agreement signed today between Island Aviation Services (IAS), operator of Maldivian, and Hawks Hotels, a major player in the island’s thriving guesthouse tourism sector.
The agreement,
signed during President Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to B. Atoll, aims to boost
accessibility to the island and support its rapidly growing tourism industry.
Representing Hawks Hotels, Director Hussein Amaan formalized the deal with IAS
Managing Director Ibrahim Iyas in a ceremony held in Kamadhoo this morning.
Speaking at the
event, President Muizzu highlighted the economic potential of the move,
describing the introduction of seaplane services as a game-changer for the
island’s economy. “The commencement of seaplane services will bring
significant economic benefits to an island where local tourism is so
well-developed and rapidly progressing,” he said, reaffirming his
administration’s commitment to supporting Kamadhoo’s economic growth.
Kamadhoo, known
for its vibrant guesthouse scene, has become a prominent example of
community-driven tourism in the Maldives. The island currently relies on
speedboat transfers, which, while reliable, often limit travel flexibility for
visitors. The addition of direct seaplane services is expected to significantly
reduce travel time from Velana International Airport, making the island more
attractive to tourists seeking quick and scenic transfers.
Kamadhoo Council
President Hassan Zareer welcomed the initiative, expressing optimism about its
impact. He noted that the launch of seaplane services would further expand the
island’s local tourism opportunities, benefiting both guesthouse operators and the
wider community.
The partnership
between Island Aviation and Hawks Hotels also reflects a broader trend in the
Maldives, where guesthouse-rich islands are increasingly collaborating with
service providers to secure direct air links. By arranging such services
collectively, local tourism businesses aim to enhance their competitiveness and
attract a larger share of visitors in a market traditionally dominated by
luxury resorts.
With the
agreement now in place, preparations for operational logistics and scheduling
are expected to follow swiftly, with hopes that Kamadhoo’s first seaplane
landing will take place in the near future.
