Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed has said that the online payment service PayPal will be launched in the Maldives soon, noting that technical testing for the service is currently underway.
Speaking at a press conference held yesterday, Minister Saeed said Maldivians will soon be able to access the widely used international payment platform.
He explained that introducing PayPal to the Maldives was a presidential pledge made by Mohamed Muizzu during his campaign.
According to Saeed, PayPal is a highly reputed global service and the platform will only be introduced once the Maldives’ payment infrastructure meets the required standards.
PayPal is an American multinational financial technology company that operates an online payment system in most countries that support digital money transfers. The platform allows individuals and businesses to send and receive payments electronically and is widely used by online vendors, freelancers, auction sites and e-commerce platforms as an alternative to traditional payment methods such as checks or bank transfers.
The introduction of PayPal has long been requested by Maldivian freelancers, online businesses and digital entrepreneurs who rely on international payment platforms to receive payments from overseas clients.
