UWC Maldives has awarded scholarships to four Maldivian students, enabling them to pursue their higher secondary education at prestigious United World Colleges (UWC) in the United States, Japan, Armenia, and Eswatini.
United World Colleges is a globally renowned educational movement with 18 schools across the world. Students enrolled at UWC undertake the two-year International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme, an internationally recognized qualification equivalent to A-Levels and accepted by universities worldwide, including recognition by the Maldives Qualifications Authority.
The four students selected by UWC Maldives for this year’s scholarship program are:
Fathimath Sasha Farhath (Ghazee School) – UWC ISAK Japan, Japan
Fathimath Fariha Fayaz (Aminiya School) – UWC Dilijan, Armenia
Jian Ahmed Saeed (Aminiya School) – UWC Waterford Kamhlaba, Eswatini
Aminath Ula Ahmed (Finland International School) – UWC USA, United States
UWC Maldives Selections Coordinator Izman Suhail highlighted the significance of the opportunity, stating that the education offered by UWC provides students with a unique platform to strengthen their character, broaden their perspectives, and develop essential skills for the future.
“The education provided by UWC is a unique and highly valuable opportunity for students to build their personal character and develop their skills. It will also serve as an important pathway opening up higher education opportunities for these students,” Izman said.
UWC Maldives serves as the national committee representing UWC schools in the Maldives. The scholarship program is made possible through the generous support of the Alifulhu Thuthu Foundation and the UWC International Organization. The opportunity is offered annually to Maldivian students who have completed Grade 10.
Since its establishment in 2001, the scholarship initiative has enabled more than 70 Maldivian students to pursue their education through UWC. According to UWC Maldives, nearly all students who completed the two-year programme have gone on to secure further scholarships for higher education, with many continuing their studies at universities in the United States.
Currently, three Maldivian students are studying at UWC campuses in Canada, India, and Hong Kong under the scholarship programme. Additionally, two students who completed their UWC education in Germany and China earlier this year have successfully secured placements for higher education at universities in the United States.
The continued success of the programme reflects UWC Maldives’ commitment to expanding educational opportunities for young Maldivians and preparing future leaders through an internationally focused learning experience.
