STELCO Opens Applications for UK Engineering Scholarship Programme

The State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has announced the launch of its merit-based engineering scholarship scheme, offering Maldivian students the opportunity to pursue higher education in the United Kingdom.

The scholarship programme, conducted in collaboration with the University of Southampton, focuses on two key fields — Mechanical Engineering and Electrical & Electronics Engineering — aimed at developing highly skilled technical professionals to support the Maldives’ growing infrastructure and energy sector.

According to STELCO, the initiative targets high-achieving Maldivian students under the age of 24 who demonstrate strong academic performance in science and mathematics. For Mechanical Engineering applicants, the requirement includes A’Level results of A*AA with a minimum grade A in Mathematics and Physics, alongside a pass in the Physics practical where applicable.

Students applying for Electrical and Electronics Engineering must obtain AAA at A’Level, including Mathematics and at least one subject from Physics, Further Mathematics, Electronics or Computer Science. The company noted that equivalent International Baccalaureate (IB) qualifications will also be considered.

In addition to academic requirements, applicants must achieve at least a grade 4 or C in GCSE/IGCSE English Language or an equivalent qualification.

STELCO stated that the scholarship reflects its broader commitment to investing in national human capital, particularly in specialised engineering disciplines that are critical to the country’s energy transition and infrastructure development.

The company encouraged eligible students to submit applications before the deadline, which has been set for 26 March 2026 at 15:00. Applications can be completed through the online portal accessible via STELCO’s official channels.

The scholarship programme forms part of STELCO’s ongoing efforts to support education, build technical capacity, and prepare the next generation of Maldivian engineers for leadership roles within the utilities and energy sector.
