Dhiraagu has received three international awards recognising the performance of its 5G network, with the honours presented at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, one of the telecommunications industry’s largest global events.
The company secured three Ookla Speedtest Awards for the first half of 2025, including Maldives’ Fastest 5G Network, Maldives’ Best 5G Network, and Maldives’ Best 5G Gaming Experience. The awards were based on data from Ookla Speedtest Intelligence and were presented during the global telecom gathering in Spain.
The recognition highlights the increasing importance of network performance in the Maldives’ telecommunications sector, where competition between operators is increasingly shaped by speed, reliability, and latency.
Gaming performance has emerged as a key benchmark in recent years as user behaviour shifts toward data-intensive activities such as real-time gaming, high-definition streaming, and interactive digital platforms. Industry observers note that these applications place greater demands on network infrastructure and have become an important factor in consumer choice.
Dhiraagu stated that more than 73 percent of the Maldivian population currently has access to its 5G network. The company has also previously been recognised with Maldives’ Fastest Mobile Network award for three consecutive years and Maldives’ Fastest 5G Network for two consecutive years.
The expansion of 5G coverage has been central to Dhiraagu’s broader digital strategy. As the first operator to commercially launch 5G services in both South Asia and the Maldives, the company has focused on expanding nationwide connectivity while positioning advanced network infrastructure as a platform for digital services, business operations, and public sector transformation.
International benchmarking firms such as Ookla play an increasingly prominent role in the global telecommunications industry. Their rankings are based on user-generated Speedtest data, offering comparative performance metrics that telecom operators often use to demonstrate network quality.
Dhiraagu, formally Dhivehi Raajjeyge Gulhun PLC, remains the Maldives’ largest telecommunications and digital services provider. The latest awards place the company among global operators recognised for 5G performance at a time when regional markets are accelerating investment in next-generation mobile networks.
As demand for digital connectivity grows across sectors including finance, tourism, and government services, network performance continues to carry strategic importance for the Maldives’ wider digital development.
