Maldives Airports Company Limited has issued a travel advisory warning of potential flight disruptions at Velana International Airport following temporary airspace closures in parts of the Middle East amid escalating regional conflict.
In a statement released today, the airport operator said the evolving geopolitical situation has affected international flight routes, particularly for passengers travelling to or transiting through key Middle Eastern hubs. Several countries in the region have imposed temporary restrictions on their airspace, leading to schedule changes, rerouting and possible delays.
MACL urged all passengers bound for destinations in the Middle East, or connecting through major transit airports in the region, to verify their flight status directly with their respective airlines before proceeding to the airport. The company also advised travellers to remain in close contact with tour operators and strictly follow official travel instructions issued by carriers.
The advisory comes as tensions intensify following military actions involving Israel and the United States against Iran. Subsequent retaliatory measures have raised security concerns across the region, with reports indicating that certain United States military installations have been targeted. The situation has prompted precautionary aviation measures, including temporary airspace closures and revised flight corridors.
Velana International Airport, operated by MACL, serves as the Maldives’ primary international gateway and is heavily reliant on transit connectivity through Middle Eastern aviation hubs such as Dubai, Doha and Abu Dhabi. Airlines based in these hubs play a critical role in linking the Maldives to Europe, Asia and North America. Any prolonged disruption in those corridors has the potential to affect passenger flows, tourism arrivals and cargo operations.
MACL stated that real time updates on flight movements at Velana International Airport are available through its official flight information portal. Passengers are encouraged to check the airport’s website and their airline’s official communication channels for the latest operational updates.
While no widespread cancellations have been announced at the time of the advisory, aviation analysts note that extended regional instability could lead to longer flight times, higher operational costs due to rerouting, and potential fare adjustments. For a tourism dependent economy such as the Maldives, maintaining reliable air connectivity remains critical, particularly during peak travel seasons.
The advisory reflects a precautionary approach by airport authorities as global aviation adjusts to heightened geopolitical risks. For travellers and industry stakeholders alike, the situation underscores the Maldives’ exposure to external shocks and the importance of coordinated response mechanisms to safeguard connectivity and economic stability.
