As Ramadan approaches, the government has assured businesses that concrete steps will be taken to address the operational and logistical challenges commonly faced during the holy month, with a strong focus on ensuring steady supplies and price stability across the Maldives.
The Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Mohamed Saeed, met with importers and retailers this week to discuss preparations for Ramadan and identify practical solutions to recurring bottlenecks in the supply chain. The meeting, held at the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade, brought together senior officials from key government agencies alongside representatives of the business community.
At the center of the discussions was the need to guarantee the availability of essential commodities and prevent sharp price fluctuations during the peak consumption period. Business representatives outlined the challenges they typically face in importing goods, clearing shipments, and distributing products nationwide during Ramadan, when demand surges significantly.
Minister Saeed assured participants that the government would work closely with relevant authorities to implement effective and meaningful solutions. He emphasized that maintaining a stable and well-supplied market is a top priority, particularly during Ramadan, when households rely heavily on consistent access to food and other essential items.
According to the Ministry, the meeting forms part of a broader, ongoing effort to strengthen coordination between public institutions and the private sector. Officials said discussions also focused on removing obstacles in transporting and distributing goods to islands across the country, with the aim of establishing a more efficient and resilient supply network.
The Ministry noted that enhancing collaboration between government agencies and businesses is key to safeguarding market stability. By proactively addressing import and distribution challenges, the administration aims to ensure that consumers experience uninterrupted access to essential goods throughout the holy month.
