As the Maldives continues to evolve, one institution has remained at the heart of its transformation, quietly powering daily life, safeguarding public health, and building resilience for the future. Today, Male' Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) celebrates 31 years of service, marking a journey defined by innovation, growth, and unwavering commitment to the people.
Established on April 1, 1995, MWSC was born out of necessity to address one of Male’s most pressing challenges at the time: reliable water and sewerage services. What began as a modest operation with just 60 employees serving a population of 60,000 has transformed into a national success story. Today, MWSC employs over 1,000 people and delivers essential services to nearly 200,000 residents, almost half of the country’s population.
MWSC’s footprint now extends far beyond Male’, reaching communities in Hulhumale’, Villingili, Gulhifalhu, Thilafushi, K. Maafushi, R. Dhuvaafaru, and HDh. Kulhudhuffushi. In some regions, such as Dhuvaafaru, the company goes even further, providing electricity, waste management, and even ice production to support local livelihoods. This expansion reflects more than growth; it represents a mission to ensure equitable access to essential services across the Maldives.

Over the past year, MWSC has taken bold steps to strengthen water security in the Greater Male’ Region. New reverse osmosis plants have significantly boosted production capacity, while expanded storage infrastructure has increased resilience during peak demand and emergencies. Water production capacity has risen from 44,950 to 49,900 tons daily, while storage capacity has increased by 25 percent to over 50,000 tons. Interconnected networks via the Sinamale’ Bridge now allow flexible water transfer between regions.
In the atolls, similar advancements are underway. Kulhudhuffushi now benefits from a 27 percent increase in water production, while Dhuvaafaru has seen a 16 percent boost in electricity capacity, ensuring more reliable services for homes and businesses alike.
In line with the national “Maldives 2.0” vision, MWSC is redefining customer experience through digital innovation. Its upgraded mobile application and e-portal now allow customers to pay bills anytime and anywhere, track water usage in real time, and request services seamlessly. With prepaid systems and smart meters on the horizon, MWSC is moving toward a smarter, more efficient future, placing convenience and control directly in the hands of its customers.

Today, MWSC is more than a utility provider. With decades of expertise, the company has grown into a leader in engineering, manufacturing, and technical services. From designing and fabricating water treatment plants to producing pipes and bottled water in its Hulhumale’ and Gulhifalhu facilities, MWSC continues to innovate across sectors. Its ISO-certified laboratory further supports resorts and consultants with high-quality water analysis services, reinforcing its role as a trusted technical partner nationwide.
MWSC has successfully completed 111 water and sewerage projects across the country, and the momentum continues. With new agreements signed for additional islands, the company remains a key driver in national infrastructure development, helping communities thrive with sustainable and reliable systems.
Behind every milestone is a dedicated workforce committed to excellence. MWSC’s employees have been instrumental in maintaining uninterrupted services and driving the company’s growth over three decades.
As it celebrates 31 years, MWSC stands not only as a service provider, but as a pillar of national development, enhancing quality of life, protecting public health, and shaping a sustainable future for generations to come. With continued innovation, expanding reach, and a clear vision ahead, MWSC remains committed to delivering what matters most: reliable services, empowered communities, and a stronger Maldives.
