The relocation of domestic flight operations to Terminal 2 at Velana International Airport (VIA) marks the beginning of a new chapter in the evolution of domestic air travel in the Maldives, according to Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed.
Shareef made the remarks while addressing attendees at a special ceremony held at VIA on 17 February to commemorate the transition and expansion of domestic services to the newly designated terminal. The shift sees all domestic departures and arrivals now handled at Terminal 2, which previously served international operations.
In his address, the Managing Director described the migration of domestic operations as a significant addition to MACL’s ongoing efforts to enhance airport services. He noted that the relocation reflects the collective work of the company’s staff to strengthen operational efficiency and improve passenger experience.
Highlighting rising passenger volumes, Shareef said domestic travel has continued to grow alongside international traffic, placing increasing pressure on existing facilities, particularly during peak travel seasons. He explained that congestion at the previous domestic terminal often resulted in longer processing times for travellers, making the transition necessary.
“Our domestic passenger numbers continue to grow alongside international traffic, and the previous terminal frequently experienced congestion during peak periods, resulting in longer processing times for travellers,” he said. “The relocation of domestic operations to the former international terminal reflects our proactive approach to addressing this demand.”
Shareef also acknowledged the continued support of the Government of Maldives in advancing major infrastructure projects, expressing appreciation to President Dr Mohamed Muizzu for his oversight and strategic guidance in the development of the country’s aviation sector.
Terminal 2 offers expanded facilities designed to improve passenger flow and provide a more comfortable environment for domestic travellers. The transition is expected to ease congestion, streamline processing and support future growth in inter island connectivity.
The move represents another milestone in MACL’s broader development agenda, which focuses on expanding service capacity, enhancing operational efficiency and strengthening connectivity across the Maldives as demand for domestic travel continues to rise.
