The Bank of Maldives (BML) has announced that starting tomorrow, the monthly limit for foreign transactions using BML debit cards will be increased to USD 1,000, with a separate allowance of up to USD 3,000 for specific overseas expenses.
According to the
bank, the adjustment follows through on a commitment made earlier in September
to ease restrictions on foreign spending. Under the new arrangement, BML debit
cardholders will be able to make point-of-sale (POS) transactions abroad up to USD
1,000 per month. In addition, customers can access a separate USD 3,000 limit
for payments related to airline tickets, hotel bookings, and medical expenses
incurred at overseas hospitals.
The change comes
as part of a phased revision to foreign spending limits that began earlier this
year. In July, the monthly limit for purchases of foreign goods and services
via BML debit cards was raised from USD 250 to USD 500, marking the first step
toward broader access to international payments.
BML said the
latest revision aims to enhance convenience for Maldivians who travel abroad or
make international payments, while maintaining sound foreign exchange
management. The move is also expected to support individuals and businesses
relying on digital payments for travel, health, and professional services
overseas.
With these
adjustments, BML continues to strengthen its position as the country’s leading
financial institution, enabling customers greater flexibility and reliability
in managing cross-border transactions securely and efficiently.
