President Muizzu Reaffirms 33 Percent Renewable Energy Target to Drive Economic Transformation

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has pledged to deliver a major national transformation by increasing renewable energy production to 33 percent within his five year presidential term, describing the shift as vital to the Maldives’ economic future and environmental protection.

The President made the remarks in a message shared today to mark World Energy Day, where he underscored the importance of expanding clean energy to safeguard the country’s fragile natural environment and achieve sustainable development goals.

In his statement, President Muizzu said the preservation of the Maldives’ pristine ecosystems is closely linked to reducing reliance on fossil fuels and accelerating the transition to renewable sources such as solar energy. He noted that progress over the past two years represents the strongest performance the country has recorded in the sector to date.

Expressing confidence in meeting the target, the President said his administration remains committed to ensuring that renewable sources account for one third of the nation’s electricity generation within five years. He added that achieving the goal would contribute to long term economic resilience by lowering fuel costs and strengthening energy security.

“With the help of Almighty Allah, we will achieve the goal of increasing renewable energy production to 33 percent within this five year term, delivering a positive transformation for our country’s economy,” the President said.

Government efforts to scale up renewable energy projects are continuing across the country. Preparations have recently been completed to launch an initiative aimed at generating 50 megawatts of renewable energy across 24 islands, a move expected to significantly accelerate progress toward the national target.
