Maldives’ combat sports scene surged to new international prominence this week after two Maldivian fighters secured major gold victories in Muay Thai and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), marking a historic milestone for the nation’s rapidly growing fight community.

The breakthrough performances came during the Second Season Fight Night hosted by one of Sri Lanka’s fastest-growing fight promotions, held at Grandezza in Negombo on Sunday, 8 February. Competing against seasoned international opponents, Maldivian athletes demonstrated technical excellence and resilience, signaling the country’s emergence as a serious contender in regional combat sports.

In the MMA division, Saif Shaan Abdulla delivered a standout performance against Sri Lanka’s experienced fighter Raj Varma. The bout, described by observers as intense and highly competitive, showcased Shaan’s tactical skill and composure under pressure. After several demanding rounds, Shaan secured a decisive victory, earning recognition for his championship-level performance and further cementing Maldives’ rising reputation in the MMA arena.
Meanwhile, in the Muay Thai division, Ahmed Eelaf Nadeem stunned the crowd with a dominant win over Sri Lanka National Muay Thai Champion Pradeep Abesinghe. Facing one of the region’s most accomplished strikers, Eelaf demonstrated exceptional control, precision, and endurance throughout the fight. His victory not only earned a gold medal but also propelled him to the position of the number one contender in the Muay Thai Middleweight division.

Following the win, Eelaf secured a highly anticipated title opportunity and is now set to challenge Husni Ahmed for the main belt at UNLEASHED 003 scheduled for August. The upcoming fight is expected to be a defining moment for Maldivian Muay Thai on the international stage.
Officials and supporters have hailed the achievements as a significant step forward for Maldives’ combat sports development. Both athletes trained under the guidance of Head Coach Mohamed Shanas, whose leadership at Maldives Muay Thai Academy and Fight Soul Maldives has been credited with nurturing disciplined fighters capable of competing at elite international levels.

Sports observers note that the victories reflect years of dedication, structured training, and increasing investment in combat sports within the country. As Maldivian fighters continue to secure victories against established regional champions, analysts believe the nation is transitioning from a developing participant to a competitive force in global fight promotions.
With momentum building and more fighters entering international circuits, the achievements in Negombo are being viewed not just as isolated wins but as evidence of a broader transformation in Maldivian combat sports — one defined by confidence, professionalism, and an unmistakable winning spirit.
