Parliament approves Ameeza as Commissioner General of Taxation

The Maldives' People's Majlis approved the appointment of Fathimath Ameeza as Commissioner General of Taxation on Wednesday, Mihaaru reported. She will head the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA), the country's tax authority.

Ameeza was serving as Deputy Commissioner General of Taxation before the appointment.

Parliamentary group leaders from both the ruling and opposition parties backed her nomination during Wednesday's sitting. Ibrahim Falah, leader of the People's National Congress (PNC) parliamentary group, and Ibrahim Nazil, leader of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) parliamentary group, said the candidates put forward for the post were qualified, Mihaaru reported.

Ameeza holds a master's degree in accounting from Monash University in Australia, according to the report.

The Commissioner General post became vacant after Hassan Zareer, who held the role, resigned to become Minister of Finance and Public Enterprises.

MIRA is the Maldives' independent tax administration body. It oversees enforcement of the country's tax laws, including income tax and goods and services tax, and reports its collections regularly to the public.
