Maldivian launches first direct flights between Maldives and Australia

Maldivian, the national airline of the Maldives, has launched the first-ever direct commercial flights between the Maldives and Australia. The airline's Airbus A330 wide-body aircraft landed in Melbourne on Sunday, ahead of the inaugural service that formally opens nonstop connectivity between the two countries for the first time in aviation history.

The flights, which began on 17 May 2026, are being operated in cooperation with Australian travel company Luxury Escapes. The route connects Velana International Airport in Male' (MLE) with Melbourne Tullamarine Airport (MEL).

The new service eliminates the need for passengers to transit through Asian hubs, providing both Australian travelers and Maldivians living or studying in Australia with a direct air link between the two countries.

A week of activations in Melbourne

The launch follows a series of promotional events in Melbourne coordinated by Visit Maldives Corporation (VMC), the country's national tourism authority.

Visit Maldives, together with Maldivian, showcased the destination's premium travel experiences and the new Melbourne charter operations at Luxury Escapes LIVE Melbourne 2026, held from 16 to 17 May at the Royal Exhibition Building in Melbourne.

The campaign concluded on 18 May with the inauguration of the charter flight operations at Melbourne Airport, including media engagements and ceremonial activities to mark the start of the new route.

MOU signed with Luxury Escapes

Visit Maldives Corporation signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Luxury Escapes Pty Ltd, one of Australia's leading travel and lifestyle platforms, to officially represent the Maldives in Australia and New Zealand.

The agreement was signed on 16 May 2026 at the Luxury Escapes headquarters in Melbourne by Ibrahim Shiuree, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Visit Maldives Corporation, and Adam Schwab, Co-Founder and CEO of Luxury Escapes.

Under the agreement, both organizations will implement coordinated trade, consumer, media, and retail marketing initiatives aimed at increasing awareness of the Maldives as a leading travel destination. Planned activities include trade engagement events, retail campaigns, destination showcases, and integrated consumer marketing campaigns across key Australian markets.

Luxury Escapes will also facilitate a familiarization program for media representatives, including participation in an inaugural direct flight experience to the Maldives.

Officials speak

"Australia remains an important emerging market for the Maldives," said Ibrahim Shiuree, CEO and Managing Director of Visit Maldives. "The introduction of the Melbourne charter operations further enhances connectivity and supports our broader efforts to increase arrivals and position the Maldives as a preferred long-haul destination for Australian travellers."

"This new accessibility will drive not only visitation but also destination desirability," said Adam Schwab of Luxury Escapes. "Luxury Escapes is excited to be working alongside Visit Maldives to amplify the destination's presence in the market."

Context: Australia and Maldives tourism

Australia has long been among the top source markets for Maldives tourism. The launch marks Maldivian's debut in the Australian market and the first ever non-stop air link between the two countries.

The Maldives recorded 2.25 million tourist arrivals in 2025, a 9.8 percent increase over 2024. Visit Maldives said the Australian winter travel season, which aligns with the Maldives' shoulder season, presents an important opportunity to support more balanced year-round arrivals.

The A330, configured for long-haul operations, will serve the route with a full suite of passenger amenities designed for extended flights across the Indian Ocean.
