The first shipment of electric vehicles (EVs) for the Malé Taxi Line has arrived in the Maldives and is currently being cleared at Hulhumalé Port.
The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), which is spearheading the initiative, described the arrival as a significant step toward introducing a modernized public transport solution. The company reaffirmed its commitment to delivering a safe, reliable and convenient mobility service for commuters in the Greater Malé Region.
Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen, along with MTCC Managing Director DCP (Retd.) Ahmed Saudee, visited the port to inspect the clearance process, marking an important milestone in the rollout of the project.
The Malé Taxi Line initiative was formalised earlier this month when MTCC signed an agreement with the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation to implement Phase One of the project. The programme aims to introduce a fully electric taxi fleet — a first for the Maldives — as part of broader efforts to promote environmentally sustainable transport solutions.
Speaking on the initiative, Minister Ameen highlighted its importance in improving taxi standards, enhancing availability and strengthening passenger safety across the capital region.
The introduction of a 100 per cent electric fleet also aligns with national efforts to reduce carbon emissions and transition to cleaner energy alternatives in the transport sector.
The Malé Taxi Line is expected to transform urban mobility in the Greater Malé area, offering residents and visitors an efficient and eco-friendly alternative to existing taxi services.
