The government has announced plans to develop a new gas storage facility with a capacity of 1,500 tonnes in the Greater Male’ region, aimed at strengthening energy security.
Finance Minister Moosa Zameer said the project is currently in the procurement stage and is targeted for completion before the end of the year.
The facility will expand storage capacity beyond the existing 1,000 tonnes held by the State Trading Organization, with additional capacity also supported by private sector operators such as Villa Gas.
Once operational, the new infrastructure is expected to provide up to two and a half months of gas supply for the Male’ region, improving resilience in supply chains.
Zameer also confirmed plans to establish fuel reserves across three regions of the Maldives, with phased implementation timelines ranging between 18 months and two years.
The initiative reflects a broader strategy to enhance supply stability amid increasing demand and logistical challenges.
