Maldives-based startup ecosystem builder SparkHub has successfully conducted the Lean Startup Lab – Malaysia Edition, a 48-hour entrepreneurship bootcamp aimed at equipping Maldivian students abroad with practical startup and innovation skills.
Held from May 23 to 26 in partnership with Asia Pacific University (APU) and the Maldives Students Association of APU, the programme brought together 30 students — including 28 Maldivians and two international participants — from four leading Malaysian universities.
Participants represented Asia Pacific University, Sunway University, Taylor’s University, and Monash University Malaysia. Throughout the intensive workshop, students were introduced to lean entrepreneurship concepts through hands-on activities focused on validating business ideas, identifying customer needs, and developing practical startup solutions.
SparkHub stated that the Lean Startup Lab is a programme developed locally in the Maldives and inspired by the globally recognised Lean Startup Machine framework. The initiative was first introduced in the Maldives in 2019 in partnership with Dhiraagu and has since expanded through several editions across the country, including a recent programme held in Addu City in 2024.
The Malaysia edition marks the second time SparkHub has taken the programme overseas as part of its broader efforts to expand Maldivian-led entrepreneurial initiatives internationally.
The bootcamp was led by lean-certified trainer Dhanish Athif, who guided participants through real-world startup simulations designed to mirror the pressures and pace of entrepreneurship. Teams were challenged to validate real problems and customer needs before developing solutions.
Speaking about the initiative, SparkHub Co-founder and CEO Hussain Jinan said the organisation aims to position its programmes within the global startup ecosystem.
“This year we are working toward bringing our products into the global space. Though we are based in Maldives, we want to ensure our programmes benefit other startup ecosystems around the world,” he said.
President of the Maldives Students Association of APU, Zeedhan Zaeem, described the programme as a transformative experience for participating students.
“We wanted to bring something fresh — something that would make a real impact beyond the usual sports and cultural activities,” he said.
The programme also featured case study sessions by entrepreneur Abdulla Shafeeu, known as Abo, who shared insights into the development of Akuru Type using Lean Startup methodologies. Additionally, Shafiu Hussain led a session on Concierge MVPs and rapid prototyping using artificial intelligence tools.
Several Maldivian entrepreneurs and industry professionals mentored participating teams during the bootcamp, helping them refine business problems and validate proposed solutions. Mentors included Ahmed Rishwan (Rishy), Mahfooz Ali (Mau Motion), Afrah of Family Room KL, along with SparkHub partners Yaamin and Aiesha Adnan.
SparkHub said the initiative reflects its continued commitment to building entrepreneurial capacity among Maldivians both at home and abroad.
