President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed the enduring friendship between the Maldives and Sri Lanka, describing the relationship as one rooted in history, trust and shared aspirations.
Speaking at a state banquet hosted in his honour by Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Disanayaka, President Muizzu expressed gratitude for the warm hospitality extended to him, First Lady Sajidha Mohamed and the Maldivian delegation.
In his remarks, the President highlighted the deep people-to-people connections between the two island nations, noting that Sri Lanka has long been regarded by Maldivians as “a close neighbour who feels like family.” He said the relationship extends beyond diplomacy, reflecting centuries of cultural, educational and social exchanges.
President Muizzu emphasised that the partnership between the Maldives and Sri Lanka continues to evolve, particularly in areas such as digital transformation, sustainable tourism, renewable energy and ocean conservation. He noted that both countries have the opportunity to transform the Indian Ocean into a hub of innovation and shared prosperity.
Underscoring the importance of the ocean to both nations, the President described it as a unifying force rather than a dividing boundary. He called for joint efforts to protect marine ecosystems and ensure the Indian Ocean remains a region of peace, stability and opportunity.
Addressing global challenges, President Muizzu stressed that climate change remains a pressing concern for small island nations. He called for stronger collaboration and global advocacy to ensure climate justice and safeguard the future of vulnerable countries.
The President also acknowledged Sri Lanka’s achievements in education, healthcare and human development, expressing hope for expanded cooperation in education, training and technology to benefit future generations.
Concluding his speech, President Muizzu reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to strengthening bilateral relations, expressing confidence that the longstanding friendship between the two countries will continue to grow.
The banquet marked a key moment in the President’s official visit to Sri Lanka, underscoring the close diplomatic and cultural ties between the neighbouring nations.
