President Reaffirms Water Security as Vital for Women’s Dignity and Safety

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has delivered a strong and optimistic message on World Water Day, reaffirming the Government’s commitment to providing safe, reliable and affordable water and sanitation services to every inhabited island in the Maldives.

Highlighting ongoing progress and future plans, the President said water security remains a national priority, with continued investments in desalination systems, protection of freshwater resources and expansion of community-driven solutions such as rainwater harvesting.

He underscored that these efforts are not only about infrastructure, but about improving lives—particularly for women and girls. The President noted that strengthened water systems ease daily burdens and create safer, more dignified living conditions, while opening up greater opportunities for education and participation in community life.

The Administration is also working to enhance technical capacity, strengthen regulations and improve emergency preparedness to address climate-related challenges, including salinity intrusion. Increased access to climate finance is expected to further accelerate these initiatives.

In a forward-looking message, President Muizzu emphasised the importance of women’s leadership in water governance, describing their involvement as key to building stronger and more resilient island communities.

“Where water flows, equality grows,” he said, highlighting a vision where improved water access contributes directly to social progress.

Calling for unity, the President encouraged communities, civil society, utilities and development partners to work together to protect water resources and strengthen systems nationwide.

World Water Day, observed annually on March 22, is being marked this year under the theme “Water and Gender,” aligning closely with the Maldives’ commitment to inclusive and sustainable development.
