MACL opens Calm Room at Velana Airport for passengers with hidden disabilities

Maldives Airports Company Limited has opened a dedicated Calm Room at Velana International Airport for passengers with hidden disabilities, marking the first initiative under the company's newly launched Boli Programme.

MACL Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed inaugurated the facility on 7 June at Terminal 1. Representatives from Autism Care Maldives and the Autism Association of Maldives attended the ceremony.

The Calm Room is designed to provide a quieter, sensory-friendly environment for passengers who may feel overwhelmed by a busy airport setting. The space is intended to support individuals with autism, sensory sensitivities, anxiety, and other non-visible conditions.

The room is fitted with soft seating, child-friendly furniture, sensory play items, activity shelves, and calming colours. Space is provided for one accompanying caregiver to remain with the passenger.

Under the Boli Programme, passengers seeking additional support can collect a lanyard and card from the Information Counter at Terminal 1. Airport staff will use these to identify passengers who require extra assistance and provide them with more considerate service at key points during their journey.

MACL said the program takes its cues from similar hidden disability support initiatives at international airports and is designed to reflect the company's own identity in providing inclusive passenger care.

The company said it intends to continue expanding services under the Boli Programme to make the airport experience more accessible for all passengers.

Passengers can apply for Boli Programme services using the link provided at the Information Counter.
